my style influences

Happy October! I'm so thrilled that we're finally in my favorite month, which means that I'm constantly filling my house with the smell of pumpkin spice! I feel optimistic about so much and look forward to warm-weather outfits most of all. I thought I'd share what some of my style influences are, which come from varied sources. I've simplified it into general categories that are the most influential to me:

Film Characters
3 women2
3 women1

Millie Lammoreaux & Pinky Rose in 3 Women. They have been influential to me since the mid 2000s, when I tried to get Millie's haircut innumerable times! It's also the reason why I obsess over the color yellow in garments. I love the shyness of Sissy Spacek's character and how she reflects it in her 50s style clothing, while Shelly Duvall maintains the coolest curled bob in film history.

Hitchcock's Women. Whether it's the lovely Grace Kelly or Tippi Hedren in the Birds, the women in Alfred Hitchcock's films are always stylish and complex. I suppose the wardrobe has more to do with Edith Head's garment designs, but his direction is irreplaceable.

The Perfect Silhouete

It can be unrealistically ornate or understated - but the "narrow waist" silhouette is my favorite, and I wear it time and time again. Aside from the fact that it's flattering, it also feels comfortable and it always looks good. Now if only I could find an occasion for the one above...

The School Uniform
schoolgirl

I had to wear school uniforms for a short period (luckily or unluckily?) and never thought it would influence me in later years. I don't deliberately choose to wear something that makes me look like an infant, it just happens to be that way. I suppose it's the fact that it looks clean and proper while still being sweet. As these girls suggest, there's also an underlying sense of secrecy which I love as well.

Feminine Colors: Coral, Mustard Yellow & Pink

These colors in any use always make me swoon. If I look in my closet, I'll see a sprinkling of these warm tones throughout my entire wardrobe. I think it's the correlation between flowers and how the subtle hues feel very 70s to me. My favorite decade!

Unique Accessories

I rarely buy many accessories, but the kind that always interest me usually have some eye-catching feature. I'm mostly an introvert, so there's something contradictory about me selecting an item that sparkles or has soft velvet. Perhaps it's simply primal! I have so many more influences in film especially, or even characters in novels, but these are just a few that I can recall!

  1. Oh this was such a fun post! I love the narrow wasit + full skirt silhouette as well. I have lots of separates that would combine to look like a school uniform, and because uniforms are common here + I'm not that far out of high school, I actually have to actively try and avoid dressing like a schoolgirl so I'm not mistaken for one!

    1. Haha that's so funny, I guess I never thought about being mistaken for one. I'm 24 but people usually think I'm 18 (which is either a good or bad thing!). The look is pretty classic regardless so I'm sure it's lovely anyway! x

    1. Thank you Angie, that's very sweet! :) I agree that there is an elegance to those colors that is still playful. I like other colors too but I always gravitate to those!

  3. You see my problem is that I usually don't buy accessories and my outfits are a little poor sometimes....I think it's good to have some fun with clothes but I'm not brave enough to experiment...however I love glitter...x

  5. so many beautiful photos! the narrow waist/hourglass silhouette is definitely my favourite as well! not only is it flattering for my body shape but my eye is instantly drawn to clothes that accentuate it because they look so feminine and classically beautiful. also feminine colours or for me anything pastel, really, is what i'm inspired by and what i'm drawn towards aesthetically, so i love just about everything in this post!

    1. Pastels are lovely too! Somehow I always look super pale in them though haha. I also think that silhouette is flattering for me as well since I'm short and don't really have long legs to pull off most types of clothing. I've figured out what works and what doesn't - now if only they made it more often! x

  6. I love the pictures you chose to 'showcase' your style :) And I'm right there with you on the narrow waist (though I don't own many items) and school uniform-look(ish). :)
I was recently dreaming about the Grace Kelly 'To Catch a Thief' blue dress and how I'd love to own it/wear it someplace one day...
[And I've been catching up with blogs- congrats on your Etsy shop! I love it!]

  10. I love this idea of pulling your style influences from various outlets. I think my favorite may be the schoolgirl uniforms and feminine colors. I've always been a massive fan of mustard yellow and peachy pinks. I really do need to see some of Alfred Hitchcock's films. Which movie would you recommend I start out with?

    1. Oh sheesh, you could start in so many places! I always wish I could see his films for the first time again because there's nothing quite like it. For the month of October I would definitely watch Psycho (masterpiece), Rear Window and the Birds. Then I'd watch Spellbound, Dial M for Murder, North by Northwest, Rear Window, and his magnum opus - Vertigo. There are sooo many more so I'd just start them all especially after 1945. I used to rent them all as an adolescent so he's a major influence on me <3

  11. I actually watched 3 Women on Netflix after you wrote about it! And in the last few years, I have nurtured a love for mustard. It's such a rich, gorgeous colour, especially for fall.

    1. I completely agree! I have lots of mustard sweaters that I can't wait to wear, and it's so perfect for fall. I also like wearing a lot of bright red in the fall too. That's so great that you watched it! It can be a challenging film because it's quite long and the soundtrack is unconventional, but the main characters are so spellbinding x

  12. i really enjoyed reading this post. You have great style+inspiration!
I'm filing 3 women for my watchlist!
i actually read that hitchcock had a lot of input in the costume designs in his films, he believed in the symbolism of colours and in the dramatic effect of flesh-showing garments. Edith Head loved working with him for that reason = dream team!

    1. Thank you Moira, what a lovely comment! I've seen/read a few different things about that as well, and how controlling he was about the their personal lives too. He was such a genius though and I always love rewatching all of his films just to pick out all the little decisions he made. I just saw the Birds in a theater last week and I was so thrilled to see those outfits on a big screen :)

  13. I loved reading about your style influences! they really feel like you haha XD I guess movie characters influence me a lot too, but maybe my biggest influence of all are harajuku girls' photos! or not, I don't know XD It's hard for me trying to rationalize this kind of stuff!

  14. Me thinks I need to go and watch 3 Women as it looks pretty rad! And I don't think any silhouette could possibly be more all round flattering than fitted waist skirts and dresses! It just makes sense :)
