monday monday

On this lovely morning, I thought I'd share 11 random facts about myself and answer 11 questions asked by Samantha.

11 random facts
1. I was in Elle South Korea. Some years ago they asked me to send in photos for a full page feature. To this day I have never seen it!

2. I own seventeen books by Hermann Hesse. I first read his novels when I was thirteen and obsessively collected his novels after that.

3. I'm a pescetarian. For over nine years I have mostly been a vegetarian, except that I eat seafood. I recently gave up dairy too.

4. I used to be a concert photographer. It started out as a hobby when I was thirteen and then became a job, where I only got paid in free tickets. I had so many amazing experiences, but stopped once it became tedious. You can find some of my photos here.

5. I've met some of my favorite people. For me that means Thom Yorke, Sofia Coppola, and Erlend Øye, among others. When I was doing concert photography I was lucky to meet a lot of my favorite bands and artists. This is probably my biggest secret, because most people don't know this about me at all. I tend to be quite shy and keep it to myself.

6. I was the first fan to meet Coldplay in America. This is a weird one, but true. In 2000 I tagged along with my sister to meet Coldplay outside of a radio station. Back then I was a very nerdy 12 year old and when I got an autograph, it had a message that read, "Autograph #1". They explained that we were the first fans to have met them in the U.S. I don't listen to their music anymore, so it's slightly embarrassing and funny to me now.

7. I've got terrible vision. I have to wear contacts or glasses in order to see! I'm thinking of getting new cat-eye frames once and for all.

8. I've been a redhead for seven years. Although indoors it looks brown, it's pretty vibrant in the sun. I can't imagine any other color now!

9. I'm Mexican. Maybe you already gathered that by my last name, but I've only met about five people in my life who've guessed this. Most people think i'm from (insert here) but my parents were both born in Mexico.

10. I only spoke Spanish until I was four. Now I am quite awful at it, but understand most of it if spoken slowly.

11. I've known my boyfriend, Donald, for 10 years. I met him when I was fourteen, became a couple at fifteen, and have lived with him since I was seventeen. It's been a long love story!

11 questions
What is your greatest accomplishment?
Creating the home that I have with Donald. Many years ago we lived in a crummy apartment, in a bad area. We both longed to live in a nice place, and thankfully we have for almost four years. Now I can plant my own flowers on our quiet porch!

What's your favorite song?
I did a post about my favorite songs here. In short, they are Fratres by Arvo Pärt and À L’ombre De Nous by Francis Lai.

Breakfast, lunch, or dinner?
I love morning eggs, but also love the intimacy of a prepared dinner. I'd say both.

What are three things that you couldn't live without?
Since people can't be defined as things, I'd say: my macbook, Chanel mat lumiere and Erlend!

What is your greatest fear?
Not being self-motivated. In moments of difficulty, I've always come out of it with good plans.

What is your favorite movie?
Goodness, that's asking quite a lot from me. If I had to choose one it would be There Will Be Blood because the soundtrack is perfect. I made a post about my favorite films here, it includes: 3 Women, The Spirit of the Beehive, Badlands and Through a Glass Darkly.

If you could be granted three wishes, what would they be, and why?
I'd wish for my cat Erlend to be immortal (she deserves it), I'd wish for health & happiness for my loved ones (because they deserve it too), and wish for infinite money (so that I can live in the Cote D'azur of course).

What's your favorite thing about where you live?
That it's surrounded by many things, while being slightly isolated from the main city. You can read more about where I live here.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?
I see myself being absolutely happy because I'm living the life that I want, always.

What is your favorite thing about yourself?
I'd say that it's my determination. When I have something in mind, I rarely give up on it, whatever it is.

    1. Gosh, infinite money would be amazing. I so feel for you! I lived in a crummy apartment for about 3 years with Donald, complete with zero appliances and no air conditioning (in L.A. this is like murder). I thought it'd never happen, but we eventually could afford a place on the opposite end of town that was perfect. You will get there too! :) Thank you have a great week too x

    1. Haha I had to spend quite awhile remembering these things. I honestly bury it in the back of my memory or feel too daft to mention any of it. I can only take credit for 3 of the photos above, but of course all on cargo collective are mine. Thank you for the lovely words! x

  6. Sofia Coppola!?! Oh, Valerie, please do share how you met that wondrous lady.

p.s. (i'm trying to give up Dairy myself. It's so tough - I can go without milk because there are plenty of substitutes - but cheese! Oh, how i love cheese! )

    1. I know Caitlin! When it happened, I was quite dumbfounded. I was in the front row of a Phoenix concert to take photographs, when she appeared during the first song and stood right next to me. She stayed there for the entire show so I was affectively arm and arm with her! Hehe. She was pretty rowdy, much more than I ever imagined. Then I managed to take some photos of her before she was off to the after party.

p.s. I thought I could never give up cheese and ice cream, but then found out that I was lactose intolerant! So I was forced to give it up. My substitutes for cheese are avocado and adding lots of flavorful seasonings. Fake cheese is not so fun. However, they make fake-cheese pizzas and those are delicious! Soy-ice cream is almost like the real thing, so that's easy too :)

  8. So nice to come across your blog RIGHT when this is posted! Just my luck! I love that last picture!
I live in Southern California, too, and I am also Mexican (or, Mexican American as my dad likes to remind me... constantly). Can't believe you've met Sofia Coppola! I am incredibly jealous right now!
I still know Spanish pretty well, because I've taken those additional Spanish classes all my life (they're also the only language classes the schools I've been to offer), but I still have those moments where I ask my mom what a certain word means and I realize that it's a totally obvious word that I'm certain my eight-year-old self would have totally known!

Is it raining horribly in LA, too?

Phew. Your blog. Is fantastic. Sheer joy right now.

    1. Nice to meet you Jessica! What a coincidence :) I took French in high school, and then realized how dumb I was to not have perfected my Spanish! Most of my family lives in Mexico so when I talk to them it is so tough! I have to use google translate sometimes haha. You're lucky to know it well.

It's not raining yet in L.A. but it's been super cloudy and cold all day. I want Spring to come already! Thank you for the compliments, I've started following you as well :)

  9. Nice post. Of course I knew all of these things about you. Hehe. It's always nice remembering meeting those people. No one I know even knows who they are(!), so its good that we can share the excitement together. Hehe. Even Coldplay! Lol.

  10. I loved reading this <3 It's a shame you can't speak Spanish as well, maybe it will come back to you? I also have terrible vision but I mainly wear contacts, otherwise my eyes would look tiny in glasses! x

    1. :) I can speak pretty decently, enough to survive if stranded in a Spanish-speaking country. I think I'd probably have to live in a Spanish-speaking locale to really remember it. Contacts drive me crazy, but I know some people prefer it (like my boyfriend). I only started losing my vision about 2-3 years ago so I still feel like a novice! x

  14. oh wow, i am super jealous that you've met sofia coppola, that's amazing! i've only read one book by herman hesse (siddhartha) but i do have another (steppenwolf) which i am yet to read. probably his two most common books, but still. i did really enjoy siddhartha. i'm the same with my favourite author kerouac, i'd say i have at least 50 books by or about him or other beat generation authors. :)

    1. I started with Siddhartha when I was thirteen and that's what set me off, so that's a great choice still! My favorites are Narcissus and Goldmund and Demian. Such lovely tales. I remember enjoying On the Road when I was younger too, I think it makes everyone want to start a road trip :)

  15. Hi, just stumbled on your blog and I love it... very nice, calming, dreamy :)

Like you my Spanish is not perfect (wish mine sounded prettier, I have a weird mixed accent I think though I can speak sort of fluently). Mom born in Mexico, Dad Cuba but like you, people will guess everything else about background, lol.

So great you got to meet those bands and people...enjoyed your photo site.

    1. Hello Karyna! Thanks for visiting the blog and site x

Looks like we're both hispanic redheads, woo! I get so shy practicing my Spanish in public, but it's not really as awful as I'm saying. I guess the fact that I never practice does not help. What a cool heritage to have. I bet you've gotten to eat the most delicious food. I love cuban meals <3

  16. I loved reading this, and it seems you have all sorts of funny secrets you've been keeping from us. At any rate, the stint as a concert photographer explains why your blog photography is always so impeccable. I may have to do these questions if I get around to it!

You can still perfect your Spanish! I didn't speak a word of it until I was twenty-three (not that it's perfect, but consider the advantage you have over someone like me)!

    1. Haha I suppose I can be secretive, but it's mostly a byproduct of me feeling too shy. Thank you for the lovely compliments, you always have such interesting tales yourself! That's great that you learned Spanish at that age! I just turned 24 so maybe I should get on it! Also, you should do one of these question-posts, would be an interesting read I'm sure with all your travelling! x

(i noted down many movies/music references!)

so weird, i was asked a full article about my polaroid project, by Elle Girl Korea, worked on it for a week, emainling bacj and forth, the second they had everything, never heard of them again. i emailed several times, asking about it, never got any answer, and never saw the article..

    1. Ah that's terrible! I've only worked with a few publications (one time Spin magazine in the US) and as soon as they get what they want, they disappear! It's quite awful really, and one reason why I probably would not do it again! I think I emailed them several times asking for a copy of the magazine, but they never replied either! Argh...
